This week, President Obama signed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. In the past, the USDA has used the National School Lunch Program as a dumping ground for surplus meat and dairy commodities. Not surprisingly, 90 percent of American children consume excessive amounts of fat, and only 15 per cent eat the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables. The act will replace junk food in school lunches and vending machines with more healthful options.

The bi-partisan city council and mayor of America's Finest City have unanimously signed a proclamation declaring October 2 to be the start of "San Diego Veg Week." "October 2nd is the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, who was vegetarian as part of his belief in nonviolence," states the proclamation. "Other great social justice leaders, such as Cesar Chavez, Coretta Scott King, and Dexter Scott King, chose to be vegan to promote compassion to animals." The proclamation can be viewed at www.sdvegweek.com, which also includes info on events taking place throughout the week and vegetarian discounts being offered at various restaurants. Councilmember Todd Gloria, who sponsored the proclamation, is pledging to go veg for the week, as are Assemblymembers Lori Saldana and Pedro Nava.

Hundreds of people have been sickened in a salmonella outbreak linked to eggs in four states and possibly more, health officials said Wednesday as a company dramatically expanded a recall to 380 million eggs.
08/06/2010 1 million pounds of ground beef recalled
The California Department of Health notified the USDA in mid-July of a cluster of E. coli-related illnesses, leading to the recall. Tests identified the bacteria as E. coli O157:H7, the strain most commonly responsible for food poisoning. Symptoms of infection often include often include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting and a low fever. More serious infections can lead to kidney failure, brain damage and sometimes death.

Also last month, a California meat company recalled 4.9 million pounds of beef and veal amid concerns over unsafe processing practices. The company, Huntington Meat Packing Inc. of Montebello, had recalled 864,000 pounds of beef in January because it was suspected of being contaminated with E. coli.
